It's imperative to find a coach who understands your business personality. Each coaching session is unique and does not follow a standard agenda; however, here are 10 top tips for anyone who's taking part in a coaching session.

1. It's better out than in

Coaching is really a conversation with a purpose. Simply discussing the situation out loud allows you to discover how to move forward, potentially identifying solutions you may never have considered.

2. You haven't done anything wrong

Quite often you may be offered coaching as a result of a performance appraisal. This should never be seen as a punishment. This is actually a great opportunity for you to tackle ideas and situations in a confidential and non-threatening environment.

3. Be honest

You can only do so much at one time. With your coach, you will set yourself goals to achieve between each session.

Be realistic in what you can achieve as not achieving a goal always puts you back a step. Even if your time is limited, a small step is still a step in the right direction.

4. Big Brother isn't watching here

All coaching sessions are confidential between the coach and the coachee. Only information that you agree with will be passed to your manager or fellow team members.

5. Big steps take small steps

Your personal goals might seem to be unrealistic as they seem to be very big from your current perspective. In reality, all goals are achievable with enough patience and planning. 

Working with your coach, you will be able to break up the goal into manageable steps, each one taking you closer to your ultimate goal.

6. We'll do this together

You are not alone on your journey; your coach will be with you every step of the way. Their role is to remind you of your goal and what you have achieved so far. 

Sometimes, they may actually be racing to keep up with you, but don’t leave them behind.  It’s lonely on your own.

7. You can take it with you

The new skills and techniques that you pick up during your coaching sessions are transferable to new Challenges. 

When you have worked through the current issues that you face in an objective manner, you can apply the method again the next time you face a similar situation.

8. Learn your organisational culture

This may be your only chance to gain one-to-one help and assistance from a more experienced member of staff.

It’s a chance to get the inside edge on how they successfully overcome difficult tasks in the culture of your organisation; this may give you inspiration on how to overcome situations you are facing.

9. It's your journey

You are going along the journey with the coach, but it's only you who can know when you are happy that you have taken on board your new discoveries. You may need time to settle into the new working culture that you have discovered.

Even if you have not achieved your ultimate goal, you may need to take a pause to consolidate your skills before deciding how to move on.

10. Looking to the future

You may set yourself new goals and if you have found coaching useful to reach you targets in the past; there is nothing to stop you asking your coach to assist you with your latest Challenges.

Your organisation is investing time and resources in your development so you can expect to be working very hard in your coaching sessions. For many people they offer insight into the link between you as an individual and as an employee. Enjoy the journey.
